The DPRK wants to open its borders to visitors from abroad, they have started the construction of a new beach resort.
On Tuesday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ceremonially launched the construction of a new beach tourist resort. It is supposed to be the “first big step” in the broader opening of borders for visitors from abroad, TASR informs based on a report by the AFP news agency.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) reopened its borders in August 2023 after more than three and a half years. She closed them at the beginning of 2020 due to the covid pandemic. Kim stressed that the resort, which is part of the Wonsan-Kalma development project in the east of the country, is a “big first step” in the development of local tourism. In photos published by the North Korean news agency KCNA, the leader and his daughter were seen walking along the waterfront and they are looking at the hotel development.
During the visit, Kim Jong-un expressed “great satisfaction” that the facilities were built in such a way that “they can be successfully used to organize important external, political and cultural events of the state”, North Korean media reported.
Analysts say Kim took a keen interest in the development of North Korean tourism in the early years of his rule, with the construction of the Wonsan-Kalma resort in question being one of his “favourite projects”, according to AFP.
