São Paulo announced this Tuesday that midfielder Luiz Gustavo, 37, will remain at the request of coach Luis Zubeldía. The new contract for the athlete, who has been considering ending his career at the end of the season, runs until December 31, 2025.
“I’m very happy to be able to continue at São Paulo. We will have a special year, with the possibility of competing in major competitions again. The club is looking to reinforce itself in the best possible way. For me, it’s time to continue, not to give up”, he stated the steering wheel.
In his first season at São Paulo, Luiz Gustavo played in 46 matches, 37 as a starter. The midfielder provided an assist and scored five goals, one of them in the 2-1 victory over Corinthians, in Paulistão, which broke the taboo at the rival’s stadium. He was part of the Supercopa Rei champion group, in February, against Palmeiras.
“Luiz Gustavo’s renewal is a reason for joy. A very important athlete for our squad. A player who, in addition to his technical quality, adds his experience in contact with younger players”, commented president Julio Casares.
“Luiz is important for us on the field, with his quality and experience, and off it, being an example of professionalism and a leader of the squad. It will be great to have him with us for another season”, added the director of football Carlos Belmonte.
Luiz Gustavo will perform with his other teammates on January 8th, the date on which the delegation travels to the United States for the pre-season and the FC Series.
