Rice is one of the most consumed cereals in Portugal, essential in the diet of many families. However, a recent study carried out by the French organization 60 million consumers revealed worrying data about the presence of pesticide residues in some varieties of this food, with emphasis on non-organic basmati rice, which proved to be especially contaminated.
What does the research say?
The analysis, carried out in January, evaluated 40 rice samples sold in France, including varieties such as white, brown, steamed, basmati and round rice, as explained by . The research verified compliance with the maximum pesticide residue limits defined by European regulations, but the results showed that 15 of the samples had pesticide residues.
According to the publication Provence, non-organic basmati ricecoming mainly from India and Pakistan, was identified as the most contaminated. This raises concerns, given the popularity of this variety in recipes ranging from traditional dishes to more sophisticated options.
“These tests made it possible to verify compliance with the maximum limits established by European regulations, highlighting that a significant proportion of the samples analyzed exceeded them”, says the organization’s report.
Why is non-organic basmati rice in the spotlight?
Basmati rice is widely appreciated for its aroma and texture, and is often the choice to accompany oriental dishes and lighter diets. However, its production, especially in exporting countries such as India and Pakistan, is often associated with agricultural practices that use pesticides intensively.
Furthermore, pesticide residues can persist in rice even after processing, increasing consumers’ exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.
How to choose the safest rice?
To minimize exposure to pesticide residues, experts suggest:
- Choose organic varieties
Biological products follow stricter regulations regarding the use of pesticides, reducing the risk of contamination. - Wash rice well before cooking
Although this method does not eliminate all residue, it helps to reduce the concentration of chemicals on the surface of the cereal. - Diversify consumption
Varying between different types of rice, such as brown or round, can help reduce long-term exposure to the same contaminants. - Consult food quality reports
Staying informed about studies and evaluations carried out by consumer protection entities can help you make more informed choices.
Impact on Portugal
Although the pesticide study was carried out in France, it is important to note that rice imported from India and Pakistan is also present in Portuguese markets. Despite complying with European regulations, the results indicate that consumers should be aware of the origin and certification of the product they choose.
In 2025, awareness of the impact of pesticides on health and the environment is expected to continue to grow, encouraging more sustainable agricultural practices and more informed consumption.
A warning for conscious choices
Rice is a mainstay in the diet of many families, but research into pesticide residues in non-organic basmati rice highlights the need for greater transparency and rigor in agricultural practices and the inspection of food products.
Choosing safer alternatives, such as organic products, and adopting informed consumption practices can be the way to protect health and the environment, without compromising the pleasure of a well-cooked rice dish.
