Ukraine and Russia carried out a new prisoner of war exchange on Monday, with Kiev bringing back 189 former prisoners, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.

The Ukrainian president thanked the UAE and other partners for mediating the exchange.

“The return of our people from Russian captivity is always great news for each of us. And today is one of those days: our team managed to bring 189 Ukrainians home,” Zelenskiy said on the Telegram messaging app.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported earlier on the prisoner swap, saying each side had released 150 prisoners of war. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy in the reported numbers.

Zelenskiy said the returning Ukrainians included soldiers, sergeants and officers from different frontline areas and also two civilians who had been captured in the port of Mariupol, seized by Russian troops in 2022.

Photos released by Zelenskiy showed dozens of men sitting on a bus, some of them draped in the blue and yellow flags of Ukraine.
