The United States has applied a series of sanctions against a Russian and an Iranian entity that Washington accuses of trying to influence the American presidential elections, it was announced this Tuesday.
The sanctions applied by the US Treasury Department (the equivalent of the Treasury Department) in the Iranian case focus on the Cognitive Design and Production Center, which the United States alleges is linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, accused of having shipped several operations with the intention of reinforcing sociopolitical tensions in America, ahead of the November 5th elections.
In the case of Russia, the target of the sanctions is an organization that belongs to the intelligence service, the Center for Geopolitical Knowledge, as well as its director, Valery Korovin.
“The governments of Russia and Iran have targeted our electoral process and institutions in an effort to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns,” said Under Secretary of State for Terrorism Bradley Smith.
At the same time, the United States announced sanctions against judge Olesya Mendeleeva, for her role “in the arbitrary detention” of Alexei Gorinov, former Moscow councilor and opponent of the regime led by Vladimir Putin.
In November, Gorinov was sentenced to an additional three years in prison, while already serving a seven-year prison sentence, after denouncing the ongoing military invasion of Ukraine, during a city council, in 2022.
The sanctions announced today involve the freezing of all assets held directly or indirectly by the targeted people and entities.
