This Wednesday (1), Ukraine interrupted the supply of Russian gas, which passes through the country, to European customers, after the end of a pre-war period at the end of last year.
Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko confirmed on Wednesday morning that Kiev had stopped the transit “in the interests of national security”.
“This is a historic event. Russia is losing markets and will incur financial losses. Europe has already decided to phase out Russian gas, and (this) is in line with what Ukraine did today,” said Halushchenko, on the Telegram messaging app.
Russian energy company Gazprom said in a statement released on Wednesday that it “has no technical and legal possibility” to send gas through Ukraine, due to Kiev’s refusal to extend the agreement.
