133 municipalities charge a minimum IMI rate

8 city halls in Greater São Paulo and 5 in Greater Porto are among the municipalities that now pay just 0.3% tax. Those who pay the most are those who have a house in Nazaré or Vila Real de Santo António.

There are at least 133 municipalities that apply the minimum rate of Municipal Property Tax, worth 0,3%according to data shared with .

Every year, the IPTU is set by city halls, and there is also a maximum limit: 0,45%. Only 2 of the 278 municipalities in mainland Portugal are at this level (JN only had access to numbers from 218 municipalities): Nazaré and Vila Real de Santo António. However, municipalities like Algodres Ovens e S. Brás de Alportel are also around this value, standing at 0.41%.

But in municipalities that are part of adjustment programs (when they are in debt), the value can go up to 0.5% (this was the case of Vila Real de Santo António, which in the meantime managed to reduce it to 0.45%). The person responsible for the collection is the Federal Revenue Service.

The metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto now have several municipalities with the minimum rate. In the first, Mafra, Palmela, Amadora, Lisbon, Oeiras, Sintra and Vila Franca de Xira are subject to the minimum ratewhile Sesimbra, Setúbal, Moita and Loures are the ones that pay the most, between 0.38% and 0.36%.

In the Porto metropolitan area, Those who pay the minimum are Oliveira de Azeméis, Vale de Cambra, Paredes, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Arouca and Santo Tirso. And those who pay the most are Trofa, Gondomar, Matosinhos, Santa Maria da Feira and Vila Nova de Gaia.

But the numbers this year download just for 42 municipalities. The others already had their rate set at the minimum. Of those who lower the tax, only 5 go down to the minimum allowed by law: Portalegre, Vidigueira, Faro, Ílhavo and Tavira. 128 already did so.

1,748 buildings in Barreiro will pay triple IPTU. This is because they are vacant or in ruins. The same measure to combat the abandonment of houses applies in the municipalities of Silves and Vila Nova da Barquinha.
