Bus fare in Rio will cost R$4.70 from January 5th

The adjustment was announced by Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD); last increase had been in 2023

The mayor of Rio, (PSD), said this Wednesday (January 1, 2025) that bus fares in the city will increase by R$0.40 from Sunday (January 5). According to him, the measure will be published in the Official Gazette on Thursday (Jan 2). With this, the new price will be R$4.70. The mayor stated that it is important to have the “culture of annual adjustment”.

“We are applying [a inflação] period in which there was no adjustment. I always want to remember: the municipality started subsidizing the ticket. It is the municipal budget that is spent if we do not make this adjustment. It is important to have this culture of annual adjustments, yes, so that we do not have the municipality’s budget unbalanced”declared Paes.

According to the mayor, spending on the subsidy was R$1.3 billion in 2024. The last adjustment for Rio buses was granted in January 2023. At the time, the fare went from R$4.05 to R$ 4.30. There was no increase in 2024.

Eduardo Paes this Wednesday (1st January) for his 4th term as head of Rio City Hall. “First of all, it’s tetra”he said jokingly at the ceremony at the City Council.

Paes is now the mayor with the longest tenure in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, surpassing the former mayor and current councilor (PSD), who commanded the city from 1993 to 1997 and from 2001 to 2009.

“As of today, he is not the longest-serving mayor of this city. Now I’ve taken his place, but I’m sure it makes him very proud.”he stated.
