The Syrian Ministry of Education made “amendments” to the current syllabus, which it published on social media and has generated controversy. It deleted a chapter on “the origins and evolution of life” and even the national flag.

On Facebook, there was controversy after the official account of the Syrian Ministry of Education published a series of “amendments”, which are nothing more than changes made to the school curriculum. The changes cover all students aged 6 to 18.

It is not yet known for sure whether the changes have already been applied, explains , but given the negative reaction, the Ministry sought minimize changesstating that “curricula in all schools in Syria remain unchanged until specialized committees are formed to review and audit them.”

In question are changes in expression that stand out to the eye, such as changes in “those who are condemned and have gone astray” to “Jews and Christians”in an interpretation of a verse from the holy book of Islam, the Quran.

Also the phrase “path of good” becomes “Islamic path”, and the definition of word “martyr” he stops being someone who dies for his country, becoming someone who sacrificed himself “for the sake of God”.

Some chapters were even eliminated, including one that explained “the origins and evolution of life”. In the religious chapter, there were many changes.

“The current government is an interim government that does not have the right to make these changes to programs“, commented a user on the ministry’s Facebook post. “Curriculums need to be changed in accordance with the new Constitution,” protested a Facebook user.

A statement issued on behalf of the Minister of Education, Nazir Mohammad al-Qadristates that the ministry “only instructed the removal of content that glorifies the and replaced images of the regime flag with the flag of the Syrian revolution in all school textbooks.”

The cabinet led by the HTS rebel group is expected to be an interim government until the country holds elections. The current leader Al-Sharaa has already said that It can take up to four years for these to be organized.

Until then, what will change in the education of young Syrians and how will this impact their vision of the provisional regime? Will they come to see all Christians as “condemned”?
