With sales of Tesla, Volkswagen and Toyota cars, the country is getting closer to reducing gasoline and diesel vehicles
Norway has seen an increase in electric vehicle purchases, with 88.9% of new car sales in the country in 2024 being exclusively battery-powered models. With Tesla, Volkswagen and Toyota leading sales, an increase was recorded compared to 82.4% in 2023.
The country is close to achieving its goal of having only electric cars on its roads by 2025. The Norwegian strategy includes high taxes on cars running on gasoline and diesel, while electric vehicles are exempt from import and value-added taxes.
Some fees, however, were reintroduced in 2023 to adjust the incentive policy. THE Christina Bu, head of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, highlighted Norway’s leadership in the global movement towards sustainability.
“Norway will be the first country in the world to practically eliminate cars with gasoline and diesel engines from the new car market” he stated. “We often see in other countries that someone puts tax incentives or exemptions in place and then backs off again”.
