The beginning of the year will be marked by elections for the House and Senate commands
Congress will begin 2025 with a focus on elections for the House and Senate presidencies. The dates for the work and recesses for congressmen have already been defined.
The Rules of Procedure of both Houses determine that disputes from February 1st. This year, it will fall on a Saturday.
The Boards of Directors have not yet confirmed the date for the 2025 votes, but there is precedent for elections on the weekend. This was the case in the 2015 elections, which elected (Republicans) to the Chamber and (MDB-AL) to the Senate.
There is also a precedent for elections on other days, such as the one defined by (União Brasil-AP) for the command of the Senate on February 2, 2019.
For 2025, Alcolumbre is the favorite to return to the presidency of the Senate. As for the Chamber, it is (Republicanos-PB).
WITHDRAWAL
Some federal legislative dates are fixed, such as the official beginning and end of work. In the 1st semester, it runs from February 2nd to July 17th. On the 2nd, from August 1st to December 22nd.
The elections that define the presidents are considered “preparatory” and, therefore, officially count as a recess.
In total, congressmen will have 55 official recess days:
- January – 31 dias;
- February – 1 trip;
- July – 14 dias;
- December – 9 dias.
The number should increase, because congressmen tend to end earlier than expected depending on the votes and how close they are to the weekend.

BUDGET PROJECTS
The dates for submission and approval of budget projects are also fixed.
The deadline for Congress to send the PLDO (Budget Guidelines Bill) for sanction is July 31st. It is common, however, for congressmen to fail to meet this deadline, which causes the “white recess”, that is, informal recess.
The deadline for approval of the Annual Budget Bill is December 22nd – which is also routinely disregarded.
