Authorities believe that fireworks and gasoline tanks were connected to a detonation system controlled by the driver of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded in front of a Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday morning (1st).

The case is being investigated as one according to an official briefed on the investigation.

At a news conference, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill said a vehicle fire was reported at the hotel shortly after 8:40 a.m. local time. Crews arrived and found a Cybertruck 2024 on fire, he said.

“There is a deceased individual inside the Cybertruck and I don’t know if it is a man or a woman at this time,” McMahill said.

Seven other people suffered what McMahill described as “minor” injuries as a result of the explosion.

The video shared on social media appears to show him being hosed down.

Jeremy Schwartz, acting special agent in charge of the FBI in Las Vegas, also confirmed that his team is involved in the investigation.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo wrote on X that his office is coordinating with law enforcement and will ensure they have all necessary resources available.

The Cybertruck was rented by the Turo car rental company, according to a police officer briefed on the investigation. THE CNN contacted the company.

Surveillance video shows a driver passing the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas about an hour before the car exploded, and then returning near the end of that hour and stopping in front of the hotel, where the car explodes several seconds later, the employee told CNN. .

Authorities are exploring whether there is any connection between the explosion and where a suspect plowed into a crowd with a vehicle rented from Turo, although it has not yet been determined.

In a post on X, Elon Musk wrote that Tesla is investigating the matter.

“We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by large fireworks and/or a bomb loaded in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is not related to the vehicle itself,” Musk wrote.

Eric Trump, executive vice president of the Trump organization, also posted on X that “the safety and well-being of our guests and employees remains our top priority.”

“We extend our sincere gratitude to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local authorities for their quick response and professionalism,” Trump wrote.

Galit Ventura Rozen, a guest on the 62nd floor of the nearby Resorts World Las Vegas at the time of the explosion, said he looked out the window and saw a cloud of smoke rising from the area near the Trump hotel and immediately began recording.

“We saw a huge cloud of smoke, we didn’t know what was happening,” she said. “Then I saw a line of probably at least three ambulances and a bunch of police cars,” she added.

Rozen said he later filmed a crowd of what appeared to be Trump hotel guests standing in a nearby parking lot.

McMahill told reporters that the investigation into the case is ongoing and that his team is also “well aware” of the attack in New Orleans that killed at least 15 people and injured more than 30 others.

As a result, the sheriff said they are checking “secondary devices” to ensure the safety of the community.

“There does not appear to be any further threat to our community here right now,” McMahill said.

“But obviously, a Cybertruck, the Trump hotel — there are a lot of questions we have to answer as we move forward,” the sheriff added.
