That is, as long as they only indulge in one a day. Scientists from the University of Barcelona confirmed that a glass of red wine a day reduces the risk of a heart attack better than statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs). But if it goes too far with the quantity above this measure, the negative influence of toxic alcohol becomes apparent and the effect disappears.

The study, published by the European Heart Journal, is the first in which the authors precisely measured wine consumption from urine samples provided by 1,232 participants at the start of the study and again a year later. After four or five years of follow-up, there were 685 cases of heart disease, including heart attack, stroke or death from cardiovascular disease.

Researchers from the University of Barcelona found that those people who drank 12 to 35 glasses of wine per month, they had a fifty percent lower risk as those who drank no more than one drink. Statins reduce the risk by approximately thirty percent.

According to several researches red wine has a beneficial effect on the health of the heart and blood vessels due to its high content of antioxidants. However, it also contains alcohol, which is toxic and in higher doses damages not only the liver and brain, but also the circulatory system.
