Councilor Ricardo Teixeira (União) was elected this Wednesday (1st) president of the São Paulo City Council. He will remain in office until 2026.
Teixeira received 49 votes. His only competitor, Celso Giannazi (PSOL), had six.
The councilor occupies the position left by (União), who was in charge of the administration for seven consecutive terms. Teixeira was recommended by the former president of the House.
According to Teixeira, one of the priorities is to “maintain the transparency” of the last administration, increasing the number of public hearings, and proposing that the ceremonies could eventually take place on the outskirts of the city.
When asked about the relationship between the municipal legislature and the Executive, Teixeira said that because the mayor (MDB) has a majority in the Chamber, the mayor’s projects are “easier” to be approved.
“All the projects that we approved from Ricardo [Nunes] they were changed, and the mayor elected the majority”, said the parliamentarian. “And if you elect the majority, it becomes easier. It doesn’t mean that everything will be approved, but that it will be easier to approve”, he continued.
By law, if the mayor and vice-mayor are outside the country or prevented from taking over the municipal executive, the president of the Chamber temporarily occupies the position.
