Several people were killed in a shooting at a restaurant near Montenegro’s historic capital of Cetinje, the country’s police said in a statement on Wednesday, according to local media.
Montenegro’s Vijesti TV reported that the shooting was preceded by an afternoon fight and that five people died. The suspect remains at large. Police did not detail the number of victims.
Special Montenegrin police units were sent to the area and authorities asked residents to remain in their homes.
“All available police units are on site, carrying out activities within their jurisdiction,” the Montenegro Police Directorate said in a statement, referring to efforts to capture the suspect.
Mass shootings are relatively rare in Montenegro, which has a deeply rooted gun culture.
In 2022, 11 people, including two children and the shooter, died in an attack, and six others were injured.
