Reincarnation is often seen as a mystical concept, but could it have a scientific basis?
The universe works based on energy. Everything from the galaxies spiraling through space to the thoughts forged in the human mind, involves energy.

A controversial US Army study, declassified in 2003, explored this captivating theory of reincarnation, reminds us.
In the early 1980s, Lt. Col. Wayne M. McDonnell undertook a 29-page analysis called “The Portal Process,” in which he uncovered what the Army was investigating at a small institute in Charlottesville, Virginia.
This establishment was developing the “Gateway Experience“, a unique training system designed to increase personal strengthconcentration and coherence in order to alter the fabric of consciousness.
The goal of the Gateway project was to take consciousness beyond physical constraints, even transcending the limitations of time and space, and alter the mind in order to create a kind of psychic espionage.
The analysis details some well-known techniquessuch as hypnosis and transcendental meditation, but also ventures into some lesser-known methods of investigating consciousness.
But how does this relate to reincarnation?
Reincarnation cases
In the course of their research, the team of researchers at the Monroe Institute, the center responsible for these mind-stretching exercises, made discoveries that seemed to strengthen the case for reincarnation.
“When consciousness returns to the Absolute (Monroe’s term for a realm outside space-time), brings with it all the memories it has accumulated through experience in reality”, explains McDonnell in his analysis. In other words, the memories pass from life to lifethus supporting the idea of reincarnation.
Interest in this study was rekindled by the comedian Sara Holcombfrom Chicago, who summarized the intriguing findings in a social media post: “We are almost certain that reincarnation is real. Consciousness is energy and exists outside of our understanding of reality. AND the energy… never dies“.
At the time, one from the Center for Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia School of Medicine had provided further evidence of more than 2,500 cases of reincarnation. Notably, These cases involved children under five years of age who claimed to remember having lived a previous life.
“Why children? It seems that they are the ones who most easily remember their past lives”, highlighted Sara Holcomb.
The Dual Purpose of the Gateway Study
However, the study was not limited to spiritual discourse on reincarnation and consciousness. It had a second objective, more strategic.
At the time, the Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) was investigating the use of paranormal capabilities for military intelligencea field known as psychic espionage.
Under the direction of Major General Albert Stubblebine IIIa staunch defender of psychic warfare, found himself Joe McMoneagleidentified within the scope of the project as the #1 Remote Viewer.
Currently retired, McMoneagle serves on the Board of Advisors and is a trainer at the Monroe Institute. Its role in the Gateway experiment was to use “remote viewing” to spy on military bases Russians and collect clandestine information.
Their efforts, despite a success rate of around 28%, proved crucial in “dealing with hopeless cases and drawing a general picture of the information”, notes M. McDonnell.
A “Portal Experience” has also become a subject of scrutiny for INSCOM, as part of its exploration of “out-of-body” experiences for espionage.
“There is a solid and rational basis in terms of physical science parameters for considering the Gateway project plausible in terms of its objectives essential,” says McDonnell.
Intuitive perceptions, not only of a personal nature but also of a practical and professional nature, appear to be within the limits of expectations reasonable”, concluded the lieutenant colonel.
The investigator supports the “psychic espionage” strategy as a practical approach, but also warns of difficulties in controlling or driving these experiences consistently.
However, the study concluded that more research was needed before US intelligence could use this process. McDonnell provided recommendations for potential Gateway studies, although it is uncertain whether any further investigation was ultimately undertaken.
Interestingly, a section of McDonnell’s report, the 25th page is missing — a fact that aroused the curiosity of readers most interested in the topic, who even created one for the CIA to publish.
A CIA claims it never read this pagefurther fueling theories of purposeful omission — allegedly due to the presumed powerful techniques described in the missing document.
