An investigation detects an important change in the predisposition of Spaniards to negotiate with Putin

Unconditional support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion is no longer so popular in Western Europe. A recent one has revealed that citizens are no longer in favor of helping Volodymyr Zelensky’s country at any price and indefinitely.

The survey, carried out in December in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and the United Kingdomshows this decreasing trend over the last 12 months. The option continues to dominate in countries such as Sweden (50%) and Denmark (40%), but these figures represent a drop of up to 14 points compared to January 2023. In Spain, support has also fallen to 25%, compared to 40% last year.

In contrast, support for a negotiated solution to the conflict has increased, even if it means ceding territory to Russia. This option is now preferred in four of the seven countries surveyed. For example, In Spain, 46% of citizens prefer a negotiated peace, an increase compared to the 38% registered in February 2023.

Uncertainty about US support

The return of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States could drastically change the dynamics of the conflict. During his campaign, Trump promised to end the war in “24 hours,” although he did not detail how he would achieve this goal. According to the survey, Majorities in all but one of the countries surveyed believe the new American president will reduce or eliminate support for Ukraine. This perception is particularly strong in Germany (62%) and Spain (60%).

However, Europeans are divided over whether Trump will withdraw the United States from NATO. While In Germany, Italy and Sweden, skepticism prevails regarding this possibility.the British and French are divided on the matter.

As for how its rulers should handle support for Ukraine, 17% of Spaniards believe that more aid should be sentwhile 39% consider that current levels should be maintained. On the contrary22% think it should be reduced the support.
