Israel claims to have dismantled an Iranian-funded facility in Syria to produce missiles
The Israeli military has reported that its troops dismantled an underground facility in Syria that it claims was funded by Iran for the production of long-range rockets and precision-guided missiles, in an operation launched on September 8.
The mission, prepared months before, was carried out by more than 100 soldiers from the Shaldag Unit of the Israeli army in the Masyaf area, in western Syria, which they arrived using helicopters, and none of them were injured. “The soldiers destroyed the complex and returned safely to Israeli territory,” said the international spokesman for the Israeli army, Nadav Shoshani.
This operation, according to the spokesperson, is the result of a campaign in which, for several years, Israeli intelligence was following and collecting information about this military infrastructure that was near the border with Lebanon. “The complex included advanced assembly lines designed to manufacture precision-guided missiles and long-range rockets, significantly increasing the supply of missiles to Hezbollah and other Iranian terrorist actors in the region,” he detailed.
In addition, Israel maintains that its forces have managed to access critical machinery for the manufacture of precision missiles, as well as intelligence documents that are already being investigated. “We needed to act because this clearly posed a threat to the Israelis. We must remember that in more than a year of war Hezbollah launched 7,000 projectiles against our territory and part of them were long-range,” this official argued.
In this sense, he reiterated that the army with these operations seeks to prevent Hezbollah from rearming, although he acknowledged that Iran, “despite the blows received,” still has many capabilities to be able to create weapons. “I am sure that in the future they will look for other avenues,” he criticized. Regarding the status of the ceasefire in Lebanon, in force since last November 26, this Israeli official has stated that his troops will “gradually” withdraw from the south of the neighboring country and hopes that the forces of the Lebanese army will occupy this territory, as established in the agreement.
