France in Africa: Unwelcome among friends

Alassane Ouattara, the 83-year-old President of Côte d’Ivoire, was previously considered a friend of the French. This was due to its pro-Western and market-oriented policies, which ensured France a trade surplus with the strongest economic power in Francophone Africa. But August 24, 1991 also has a little to do with it.
