The Chernobyl disaster on April 26, 1986 resulted in the world’s largest release of radioactive nuclides. There were also significantly increased concentrations of other toxic pollutants such as lead, arsenic and asbestos. Due to this enormous burden, around 120,000 people in the area around the nuclear power plant, which is around 100 kilometers north of Kiev, had to leave their homes.
