The firefighter from the Odemira corporation who was at the Hospital de São José, in Lisbon, died this Friday following injuries caused by the crash of a firefighting vehicle on Wednesday, said a source from the corporation.
“I confirm that the firefighter who was at the Hospital de São José, in Lisbon, passed away. We received the news early this morning and we think he must have died late in the morning, we still don’t know any more details”, the president of the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Odemira, in the district of Beja, António Camilo, told the Lusa agency.
Also contacted by Lusa, the commander of the , Luís Oliveira, confirmed the death of the 38-year-old firefighter, who was hospitalized with a poor prognosis.
Dinis Conceição, resident of the parish of São Luís, was part of the Odemira corporation “for around 20 years” and was part of one of Odemira’s Permanent Intervention Teams (EIP).
On Wednesday, the EIP, made up of five members, was called to intervene “in an authorized fire” in Saboia, inside the municipality of Odemira, which “got out of control”, explained the president of the humanitarian association.
“They had done [o trabalho] and were returning home” when the firefighting vehicle crashed, causing injuries to the five firefighters.
This accident resulted in three other serious injuries, one of which was transported to Santa Maria Hospital, also in Lisbon, while the other two were taken to Portimão Hospital.
Questioned by Lusa, António Camilo stated that the firefighter who is at Santa Maria Hospital, in Lisbon, with “a bruise on his head”, continues to receive care, despite being “relatively better” on Thursday.
One of the firefighters transported to Portimão Hospital “was operated on yesterday [quinta-feira] in the afternoon with a fractured femur” and the other firefighter, “with fractures in the bones of his face”, was taken to Faro Hospital, where he underwent tests and ended up being discharged “in the late afternoon” on Thursday.
The firefighter who had been transferred to Beja Hospital, with “a bruise on his head and a deep cut on his scalp”, also “came yesterday [quinta-feira] at the end of the afternoon to go home”, he added.
In a statement published today on social media, the Portuguese Firefighters League has already mourned the death of the 38-year-old firefighter from the Odemira corporation.
“Despite the medical care he received, he died today due to the severity of his injuries. The remaining four firefighters who were victims of the accident with a VFCI, which occurred on January 1st, remain, one in Santa Maria hospital, in Lisbon, two in Portimão hospital and the rest convalescing at home”, reads the publication.
39 operatives were mobilized for the accident, supported by 16 vehicles and a helicopter, from several fire brigades, the GNR and the National Institute of Medical Emergency.
The structure of the Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of Alentejo Litoral was also on site.
