German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday hinted at a possible ban on fireworks in the country. According to him, it will be necessary above all for injuries and deaths caused by pyrotechnics during this year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. TASR writes according to the report of the DPA agency.
“We need to have clear rules on what pyrotechnics can be used and take measures against all those who do not follow the law… That is the right way,” Scholz said during a visit to the fire department in the Berlin suburb of Kleinmachnow. The chaos during the New Year’s celebrations in many German cities has been causing discussion for several years restrictions on fireworks in the country. It causes damage to property, injuries, harms the environment and negatively affects animals.
Fireworks-related accidents in Germany this year on New Year’s Eve at least five people died. In some parts of the country it also caused extensive material damage.
Berlin’s Minister of the Interior, Iris Sprangerová, called for extensive nationwide restrictions on pyrotechnics, which would allow local governments to limit its launch only with special “pyro-permits”. German police are campaigning for a nationwide ban on the use and sale of fireworks and criticizes politicians for “fictitious debates” on this topic every year after New Year’s Eve celebrations without real actions.
