The entire government coalition has a problem with the quality of the legislative process. In recent months, a number of laws have been passed in an abbreviated legislative procedure. Amending bills that are not related to the original legislation are also a problem. In an interview with TASR, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini stated that he wants to assess the laws more strictly.
He claims that his team strictly assesses whether or not the approved legislation is in conflict with the protection of human rights or the Constitution of the Slovak Republic. He does not consider it appropriate for the president to interfere with the competences of the government and go into the content of the amendment itself just because he does not like it. “If every law were to be returned, in which an amendment that was not there before, or which was not directly related to the amendment, appeared during the parliamentary session, then I would have to return almost every single one,” noted Pellegrini.
In connection with the legislative process, he also wants to appeal to the government and deputies in the report on the state of the republic, which he is going to present in the plenary session of the parliament. According to his own words, he wants to give them a warning finger that from a certain moment he will judge the laws more strictly. “But for now we really focused more on unconstitutionality or violation of some rights,” added the president.
