A ten-year-old boy named Nehorai Nir made an amazing discovery during a school trip to the Ein Kerem area, located in the southwestern part of Jerusalem.
The boy found a medallion in the shape of a cross, made in the micromosaic technique.
This unique artifact, dating from the 2nd century AD, is a true work of art. Small elements of glass and stone, skillfully assembled, create an intricate pattern. Similar medallions were popular in Europe during the Renaissance, and Rome was considered the center of their production. Ein Kerem is a particularly important place for Christians. According to the Gospel according to Luke, John the Baptist was born here. Due to its strategic position between Bethlehem and Jerusalem, this area has always attracted pilgrims. Archaeologists believe that the medallion was most likely lost by one of them.
“This find is a real treasure,” said Dr. Amit Reem, Jerusalem District Archaeologist of the Israel Antiquities Authority. “It not only demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship of the ancient craftsmen, but also confirms the importance of Ein Kerem as a center of Christian pilgrimage.” The director of the Israel Antiquities Authority, Eli Eskosido, thanked the young archaeologist: “I would like to personally thank Nehorai for his vigilance and prompt reporting of the discovery of the medallion. This discovery is a wonderful Christmas present and a reminder of our earth’s rich history.”
The discovery of this medallion is yet another proof of the historical richness of the Holy Land. And who knows what other secrets its ancient lands hide.
