Chega’s leader, André Ventura, announced today, through a letter sent to the party’s deputies, that he will be a candidate for president of the Republic on behalf of the party.

The president of Chega, Andre Venturawill be the party’s candidate for President of the Republic, said this Saturday.

The intention to run for the 2026 presidential election was announced through a letter sent to deputies of the party.

According to this letter, to which the Lusa agency had access, Ventura asks the deputies “to greater secrecy about the situation”, saying that he will make his candidacy official on February 28th, at 8 pm, at the Jerónimos Monastery, in Lisbon.

“The reasons are diverse, but they are essentially related to the need to have a candidacy that represents the space of the Right anti-corruption and anti-immigration without confusion with politicians who have defended the opposite all their lives and now intend to appropriate our political space”, can be read in the same letter.

Among “several” reasons, the Chega leader adds that he will also move towards prevent other candidates from having Chega’s support without liking the party, says SIC Notícias.

In the letter to deputies, the leader of Chega states that he intends to “express the growing majority” against the “current system of bipartisanship and negotiations of the regime”.

Ventura ends the letter to his party’s deputies by highlighting that one of the candidacy’s priorities will be “the defense of security forces, police officers and magistrates in the fight against crime, given the context of insecurity that exists in Portugal”.

In December, Correio da Manhã had reported that Belém, and Chega’s support for Admiral Gouveia e Melo would be ruled out.
