The government of the President of the United States, , approved an arms sale worth around US$8 billion to , a package that includes anti-aircraft defense ammunition, the State Department announced this Saturday (4). The sale was agreed just days before the inauguration of Republican Donald Trump, also a strong ally of Israel in the war. Before leaving office, Biden again ignored pressure from human rights organizations and Democratic lawmakers who oppose arms sales to Israel.

“The president has made clear that Israel has the right to defend its citizens, in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law, and to prevent aggression by Iran and its allied organizations,” he argued. During a speech to Congress in November, Senator Bernie Sanders – from the more progressive wing of the Democrats – called for an end to these arms sales to Israel.

“The United States is complicit in all of these atrocities. We are financing these atrocities and this complicity must end,” he said, referring to the countless civilian deaths and the massive destruction left by Israeli military operations in the Palestinian territories. Trump has pledged unwavering U.S. support for Israel and, unlike other recent presidents, has never committed to an independent, sovereign Palestinian state.

However, he also expressed his desire for a ceasefire in Gaza. Despite intense diplomatic efforts led by Qatar, Egypt and the US, no truce has been agreed since a week-long ceasefire in late November 2023.
