Road safety authorities recorded 5,499 accidents on Portuguese roads during the Christmas and New Year period, which caused 25 deaths and 115 serious injuries, fewer accidents but more deaths and injuries than the previous year.

In the six remaining districts of the continent — Bragança, Coimbra, Évora, Portalegre, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real — as well as in the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, “the objective of zero deaths on Portuguese roads was achieved”says the statement.
