Do you make it with honey? Be careful, it may lose its nutritional value

Warming tea with honey on a winter evening is something we like to drink. However, it will not always be full of vitamins and minerals that support the body. it is known for its health-promoting properties, it is also common that it does not spoil, so it can be stored in any way. However, this is not entirely true. Honey does not spoil, but it may lose its nutritional value. Then adding it, e.g. to tea during a cold, will not support the body.

Honey contains numerous vitamins and minerals that support the functioning of the entire body, including the digestive and immune systems. This ingredient is also often referred to as the world’s oldest antibiotic. The benefits of consuming it are confirmed by hundreds of studies, but we often forget that too high a temperature can destroy the valuable nutrients found in honey.

Who has never left a jar of honey by the stove or a warm kettle? When adding this ingredient to cakes, we often place it in a warm place, which may have negative effects. High temperature destroys many microelements found in honey. Moreover, a common mistake is not tightening the jar, which causes the honey to absorb water, odors and other elements from the environment, which is also not good for its health-promoting properties.

It is best to store honey in a cooler room away from the stove. It is best for the temperature to be 18-20 degrees Celsius. If we have a cellar or pantry where the temperature is approximately 10 – 15 degrees Celsius, we can also store honey there – a lower temperature will be definitely better than a higher one. We don’t have to keep opened honey in the fridge, but if we have space, there’s nothing stopping us from storing it there, but we must remember that it will crystallize.

We most often add honey to tea, but in order to maintain its health-promoting properties, it is worth remembering one very important thing – we should not add it to boiling water. Honey begins to lose its nutritional value at temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is not worth adding it immediately to the poured tea, it is better to wait for it to cool down and then add this sweet and healthy addition.

Additionally, we should remember not to apply honey with metal spoons. Honey is acidic, which may cause corrosion of metal, so metal spoons should not be left in it. Wooden ones will be a better option. Of course, we can mix the tea with honey with a standard spoon.
