State Government resumed works, announced new lines and began expanding others; sector created around 50,000 jobs
Rail transport received record investments and created thousands of jobs directly and indirectly in 2024. There was a total of at least R$46.3 billion in public and private investments to build lines and expand existing ones. The amount represents the largest investment in the 50 years of existence of the São Paulo Metro. In terms of jobs, 9,670 were created, a number that stood at 40,215 in concessionary works.
On behalf of the São Paulo Metro, it was R$27.2 billion. The initiatives included building lines, expanding existing ones and purchasing trains. There were R$23 billion in 3 lines, R$3.6 billion in the purchase of 44 new trains and R$96 million in the construction of the Paulista-Consolação tunnel. Furthermore, Metro invested R$468.4 million in expanding the Vila Prudente and São Joaquim stations.
Finally, the Government of São Paulo will also deliver the 1st section of Line 6-Orange in 2026, between the Brasilândia and Perdizes stations. In 2027, the 2nd section will be delivered, between Perdizes and São Joaquim, connecting the north zone to the city center and connecting with Line 1-Blue of the Metro and 7, 8 and 9 of urban trains. The value of the project is R$19.1 billion. In total, 10,207 employees, including concessionaire, construction company and subcontractors, make up the project’s professional staff.
Known as the “Universities Line”, the project consists of 15.3 km in length and 15 stations which will pass close to several educational institutions, such as Centro Universitário São Camilo, PUC-SP, FMU, FAAP, Mackenzie, Unip and Uninove .
In addition to financial investment, the Metro works also create a series of jobs. The expansion of Line 2-Green, for example, brought 6,604 jobs. The construction of Line 17-Gold, 1,682. The expansion of Line 15-Silver brought 1,178 and the expansion of São Joaquim station, 206.
Furthermore, in 2024, Line 4-Yellow, managed by the company ViaQuatro, hired 2,036 direct employees and 5,791 indirect employees. Line 5-Lilac has 1,794 direct employees and 4,920 indirect employees.
Metropolitan trains
The 8-Diamante and 9-Esmeralda metropolitan train lines have several contracts with different periods (full or on demand), which together reached 2,541 direct contracts and 12,926 indirect contracts. The lines have been operated by the concessionaire ViaMobilidade since April 2021.
Line 8-Diamante comprises the section between Júlio Prestes and Itapevi stations, with an operational extension between Itapevi and Amador Bueno stations. Line 9-Esmeralda connects the sections between Osasco and Bruno Covas/Mendes – Vila Natal stations.
São Paulo Are All in the Right Direction
In 2024, the state administration worked to pave a path that guarantees more investments to create opportunities, foster prosperity and ensure more dignity for people. The Government of São Paulo has become more efficient by following the guidelines of the São Paulo in the Right Direction plan, focused on fiscal balance measures and modernization of the state.
São Paulo reached the highest mark in the last 25 years in auctions, with a record R$340 billion in investments for schools, roads, trails and sanitation since the beginning of management. Highlight for the historic, which brings forward the universalization of water and sewage by 4 years for the benefit of millions of people in São Paulo and for the TIC Campinas, which after 20 years of waiting is becoming a reality.
In health, there were an average of 3,200 surgeries daily, with a reduction in waiting times of up to 82.6% for specialties such as breast and circulatory system repair. Education facilitated the entry of students into higher education with 30,000 places in Provão Paulista.
In security, the force was reinforced with 7,800 new police officers in 2024, the biggest growth in the last 14 years. The SP Por Todas movement integrated public policies for women’s health, safety and independence for the first time. Casa Paulista, the largest housing program in SP, delivered more than 50,000 homes. With the support of the Government of São Paulo, the São Paulo agricultural sector consolidated itself as the largest exporter in Brazil and released around half a billion in credit.
The capital’s Metro reached the biggest investment in 50 years with 4 simultaneous construction and expansion projects. In Social Development, Bom Prato served 3.2 million meals per month, with the opening of 20 units. Tourism received the largest contribution in credits in the country: R$2 billion. And in Culture, the highlight is CULTSP PRO, the largest training and qualification program aimed at the cultural sector in Brazil, the largest training and qualification program in the cultural and creative sector in the country.
