Attacking midfielder Wellington Rato was the first reinforcement to be announced by Vitória for the 2025 season. The player’s announcement took place on Friday night (3), through Leão’s social networks. In the publication, the Bahian club informed that Rato will perform next Wednesday (8), along with other names from the Leão squad. Leão agreed to buy the player, who will sign a three-year contract. The agreed amount was R$5 million.
The signing of the 32-year-old athlete was a request from coach Thiago Carpini. The coach worked with Rato in his short stint in charge of the São Paulo tricolor, at the beginning of this year. Furthermore, the two were teammates at Caldense in 2017. At the time, Carpini played as a defender/midfielder. They competed together in the Campeonato Mineiro and Série D of the Brazilian Championship.
Wellington Rato played 41 games for São Paulo in 2024, 21 as a starter. He added nine assists and one goal, scored against Bahia, in the Brazilian Championship. The attacking midfielder’s greatest moment of prominence at the São Paulo club was in 2023, when he participated in 64 matches (46 as a starter), scored five goals and provided nine assists. That season, he was an important player in winning the Copa do Brasil.
The previous year, Rato played for Atlético-GO, when he was in 70 matches (62 as a starter), scored 15 times and provided seven assists. The athlete also has stints with V-Varen Nagasaki (from Japan), Ferroviário, Joinville, Sampaio Corrêa, Caldense, Red Bull Brasil, Audax Rio and Osasco Audax.
In 2025, Vitória will compete in five competitions: Campeonato Baiano, Copa do Nordeste, Copa do Brasil, Brasileirão and Sul-Americana.
