The war in Ukraine has attracted global attention, including that of North and South Korea, which play distinct roles in the conflict. Recent reports indicate that North Korea has provided military support to Russia. South Korean sources estimate that more than 1,100 North Korean troops were sent to Ukraine, with significant casualties recorded.
In addition to troops, Pyongyang has provided weaponry, including suicide drones, rocket launchers and artillery, to bolster Russian forces. This involvement aims to strengthen ties with Moscow and gain military experience in modern conflicts. However, the presence of North Korean troops in Ukraine raises international concerns about the escalation of the conflict and the violation of sanctions imposed on Kim Jong-un’s regime.
The magazine states that, in contrast, South Korea has adopted a supportive stance towards Ukraine, providing humanitarian and financial assistance. Although Seoul has not sent lethal weapons directly to Kiev, it has participated in sanctions against Russia and expressed concern about military collaboration between Pyongyang and Moscow. The South Korean government has been closely monitoring the situation, considering additional measures if North Korea intensifies its involvement in the conflict.

The participation of the two Koreas in the war in Ukraine reflects the region’s complex geopolitical dynamics. North Korea’s military support for Russia may result in economic and technological gains for Pyongyang, but it also increases the regime’s international isolation. On the other hand, South Korea seeks to balance its support for Ukraine with the need to maintain regional stability, especially in the face of threats from the North. The international community continues to closely monitor these movements, aware that the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine could have significant repercussions on global security.
