On Friday (Jan 3), still Thursday (Jan 2) in Brazil, military personnel, personal security agents and supporters of Yoon Suk-yeol . The president was removed from office on December 14 after South Korea’s National Assembly his impeachment for not country.
Agents from the CIO (acronym for South Korea’s Senior Officials Corruption Investigation Office) went to the presidential residence to execute the arrest warrant for Yoon. There, however, the agents came across a group of more than 1,000 people, who prevented entry into the house.
The head of the Presidency’s security service, Park Chong-jun, was summoned to give a statement on Tuesday (7th January) about what happened.
Impeachment
Even though the National Assembly approved Yoon’s removal from the position of president, the final decision rests with the South Korean Court, which has 6 months to approve or suspend the impeachment. The trial start date is set for January 14. Yoon is forced to attend.
However, there is no exact number of impeachment trials needed, and the Court will have to meet until a decision is made. The meeting on January 14th will be just the 1st hearing. If the South Korean court finds that there has been a violation of the law, Yoon suk-yeol will be removed from office immediately.
Given that South Korea does not have a vice president, early presidential elections will be called within 60 days if the Court validates the impeachment request.
