China will have 60,000 km of high-speed railways by 2030

China Railway reported that the country’s investment in fixed assets in the railway sector is expected to reach US$82.08 billion in 2025

China aims to expand the length of its high-speed railways in operation from 48,000 km at the end of 2024 to 60,000 km by 2030, the country’s railway operator said on Thursday (2 January 2025).

The country continues to advance in the modernization of its railway infrastructure and predicts that the total length of its railway network in operation will reach 180 thousand km by 2030, compared to 162 thousand km at the end of 2024, according to the China State Railway Group.

China Railway said the country’s investment in fixed assets in the railway sector is expected to reach 590 billion yuan ($82.08 billion) in 2025, with 2,600 km of new railways expected to come into operation throughout the year.

In 2024, the Chinese railway network recorded a record 4.08 billion passenger trips, marking a year-on-year increase of 10.8%. Projections indicate that this number will continue to grow, reaching 4.28 billion trips in 2025, the company reported.

China’s railways transported a total of 3.99 billion tons of freight last year, an annual increase of 1.9 percent, marking continuous growth for the eighth consecutive year.

In 2024, fixed asset investment in the country’s railway sector grew 11.3 percent year on year, totaling 850.6 billion yuan, according to China Railway.

Official data also showed that freight trains between China and Europe made 19,000 trips in 2024, transporting 2.07 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) containers of goods, recording annual increases of 10% and 9%, respectively.
