I started using a homemade window cleaner last year and immediately regretted not changing it sooner. Not only is it cheaper than store bought, but it cleans better and without streaks! Plus, you only need 2 ingredients, but you can add more.
Homemade cleaning products can also be a great way to keep your home greener and reduce the amount of toxic chemicals in your home. Many people claim that they get better results when cleaning many surfaces, not just windows.
What do we need to make a sensational window cleaner?
The homemade window cleaner we use at home contains only 2 ingredients: water and isopropyl alcohol. However, you can customize the mixture by adding some of the other homemade ingredients listed below.
What you will need:
- Empty spray bottle (glass or plastic)
- Water or distilled water
- 70% isopropyl alcohol (or rubbing alcohol)
- White vinegar (optional)
- Gentle dishwashing detergent (optional)
- Essential oils (optional)
- Cornstarch (optional)
- Funnel and measuring cups
Why do these ingredients work?
Many store-bought window cleaners are overly complicated and contain fragrances, dyes, and harsh chemicals like ammonia (which at least one member of our household is allergic to). When making homemade window cleaner, you can only add what you need to get the job done.
How to get a good working product?
There is no “perfect” combination of ingredients, so we recommend trying several solutions until you find the one that works best for you. And don’t stress about the perfect measurement. We usually do it by eye.
- Alcohol-based: 1 glass of water + 1 glass of rubbing alcohol
- Vinegar-based: 2 cups water + 1/4 cup white vinegar
- Lighter scent, easier work: 2 cups water + 1/4 cup isopropyl alcohol + 1/4 cup white vinegar
- Improve grease removal: Add 1/2 teaspoon or 5-10 drops of mild dishwashing detergent to any of the above.
The windows in your apartment will stop steaming. Just put it on the windowsill for the night
