In the middle of the heating season, a situation often arises that, despite the fact that the thermostat is on, our radiator does not heat up as it should. There can be several reasons. That’s why it’s worth knowing what leads to such a situation and what to do to make our radiator warm again over its entire surface. We suggest how to proceed when the radiator is cold.

Sometimes the rooms are cold even though we have the thermostat set correctly to the desired temperature. It can be related to a common cause, which fortunately is very easy to fix. Just follow a few simple steps to get rid of the problem. See what to do if your radiator is not working as it should.

Is your radiator cold or does it not distribute heat evenly? Here is the reason

Sometimes it happens that despite proper preparation for the heating season, our radiators are cold after a few weeks and the temperature in the room drops significantly. This can be a sign that the radiators are not working properly as they need to be bled.

This is because air often collects in the central heating system, which prevents the radiators from working properly and cannot fully transfer heat. This can be caused by several factors. These include:

  • Insufficient filling of the device.
  • Skipping pre-breathing of radiators before the heating season.
  • Type of installation, since open installations are more often aerated.
  • Low-quality processing of individual components of the installation, because plastic surfaces contribute to leaks in the entire system.

How can you bleed the radiator yourself? It’s easier than you think

So if you find that your radiator is not working as it should during the heating season, try venting it. This will remove any built-up gases and allow water to fill the pipes across the radiator, improving its efficiency.

The good news is that venting the radiator itself is not difficult and there is no need to call a professional. We can easily do it ourselves. However, before we proceed with this operation, it is a good idea to protect the area around the radiator, as water will leak from the pipes. For this purpose, we reach for a large bowl so that the moisture does not damage the floor.

After securing the space, turn the thermostatic valve so that the hand points to 0 or the snowflake symbol. Then, using a screwdriver or a key, we unscrew the valve. First, we carefully loosen the screw and then slowly unscrew it over the pre-prepared bowl.

When you hear a hissing sound, get ready for water coming out of the pipe. This sound signals the successful venting of the radiator. After all the air has escaped, wipe the breather with a cloth and close it tightly. Finally, loosen the thermostat and check that the radiator heats evenly over the entire surface.

Which radiator is the most economical and which gives the best heat? It doesn’t always go hand in hand
