‘Truly extraordinary people, who dedicated their sacred efforts to shaping the culture and cause of the United States,’ said Joe Biden when presenting the titles at the White House
The President of the United States, , presented this Saturday (4) the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 honorees, including the singer and activist Bono, the former basketball player and the football star . The highest honor was awarded at the White House, in a ceremony in which Messi did not participate due to scheduling reasons. In a letter sent through his club, Inter Miami, the player said he feels “deeply honored” by the recognition, and that he hopes to meet with Biden in the near future. Biden praised the honorees, who he called “truly extraordinary people who have dedicated their sacred efforts to shaping the culture and cause of the United States.”
Other honorees were Spanish chef José Andrés, founder of the NGO World Central Kitchen; Jane Goodall, important environmentalist voice; and figures from the entertainment world, such as Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour, actors Michael J.Fox and fashion designer Ralph Lauren. With a more political profile, Biden was decorated for having “made history, often over decades, in public service”. Another honoree was millionaire and philanthropist George Soros, whose award was received by his son Alexander. Posthumously, Biden awarded the medal to Robert F. Kennedy, former attorney general of the United States.
