Initiative aims to expand access to higher education for low-income families

The Ministry of Education () revealed that, in 2025, they will go to the Student Financing Fund (). Of this total, 56 thousand vacancies will be allocated to candidates who are registered in the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government (CadÚnico), with a per capita family income of up to half the minimum wage. This initiative aims to expand access to higher education for low-income families. The Fies Social modality, which was introduced in 2024, allows students to finance up to 100% of educational costs. Furthermore, this modality reserves quotas for specific groups, promoting greater inclusion in the educational system.

In the first semester of 2024, a total of 39,419 students made the transition from traditional Fies to Fies Social, demonstrating their adherence to this new option. Fies was created by Law No. 10,260, sanctioned on July 12, 2001, with the purpose of offering financial support to students who wish to pursue degrees in private institutions. Since 2018, the program has started to offer zero interest, making access to financing even easier. The financing structure is adjusted according to the candidate’s family income, making the program more accessible.

With these new vacancies and the continuity of Fies Social, the government seeks to ensure that more students have the opportunity to enter higher education, contributing to the formation of a more egalitarian society. The expectation is that these measures will help reduce the financial barriers that many young people face when seeking quality education.
