Due to problems with a seasonal viral infection, Archbishop Anastasios first ended up in a hospital in Tirana, later his health worsened, so he was transferred to Athens. He had symptoms of stomach bleeding.
The highest representative of the Albanian Orthodox Church, Archbishop Anastasios, who was airlifted to a hospital in Athens due to health problems caused by the virus, is in critical condition. This was announced by the Evangelismos hospital in the Greek capital on Sunday, reports TASR according to the AFP agency.
At the end of December, the ninety-five-year-old Anastasios was hospitalized in a hospital in Tirana with a seasonal viral infection. However, according to Greek media, his health continued to deteriorate and he had symptoms of stomach bleeding. He was taken to Athens on Friday evening at the request of the Greek rescue services.
The Greek Prime Minister also came to the hospital
“The treating doctors assess His Beatitude’s condition as critical,” states a medical report from a Greek hospital. As recently as Saturday, they assessed his condition as “stable despite his already complicated medical history.”
On Sunday afternoon, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also visited the hospital where the archbishop is being treated, and was informed about the health condition of the sick archbishop, AFP wrote.
According to the French agency, Anastasios is credited with reviving the Orthodox Church in Albania, where the majority are Muslims. He has been leading this church there for three decades.
