Bread dough has been known since time immemorial as a practical way to use the remains of stale bread. In the past, it was available in sweet and savory versions – whatever was at hand was added. Nowadays, bread dough is most often served sweet, adding it to baking raisins, nuts, bananas, spices or chocolate. The dessert is complemented by a delicious caramel sauce. To prepare Frugal – for sweet bread dough, you can use wheat bread, baguette or challah.
Before you start baking, prepare the appropriate form. A cake tin will work well.
Ingredients:
- 5 large eggs,
- ½ teaspoon of cinnamon,
- 1-3 tablespoons of brown sugar,
- 1 loaf of stale wheat bread or 2 challah bread,
- 400 ml of milk,
- 200 ml of cream,
- a pinch of salt,
- 100 g of dark or milk chocolate,
- caramel icing or kajmak for decoration.
Grease the cake tin with butter and sprinkle with flour/breadcrumbs. Cut the bread or challah into squares of approximately 1.5 cm and arrange them quite tightly in the baking tin so that there is not much space left between the pieces of bread.
In a large bowl, mix milk, cream, eggs, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Pour the resulting mixture over the bread. You can add chopped dried fruit, nuts or other favorite additions. Set the tray with the dough aside for 30-40 minutes to give the bread time to soften. Before putting the cake in the oven, sprinkle the top with chopped chocolate.
Place the tin with the dough in the oven preheated to 180°C and bake for about 60 minutes. If the top of the cake is browning too much, cover the cake with aluminum foil or switch the oven settings to bottom baking.
Remove the baked cake to cool, take it out of the tin and pour the ready-made caramel glaze or melted kajmak over it. Cut the cake into pieces and serve.
