Severe weather caused major travel disruption this morning, with Manchester and Liverpool airports closing their runways.
Several centimeters of snow fell in England and Wales overnight Saturday into Sunday.
In West Yorkshire (northern England), the ground was covered this morning by 12 centimeters of snow, the British Met Office said.
Up to 40cm of snow fell in some areas at an altitude of over 300m.
Manchester Airport (northern England) reported to X shortly after 0700 local time that the runways for take-off remain closed. “Business will resume as soon as possible,” the airport said, advising passengers to contact their airline.
At Liverpool Airport (North) “crews are working feverishly to clear the take-off runway”, which has also been closed.
Traffic, however, resumed at Birmingham and Bristol airports, where runways were closed overnight.
The snowfall also caused traffic problems on the roads.

The management company National Highways said many roads in the north of England were closed overnight.
In Hampshire (southern England), a section of the northbound carriageway was closed this morning due to flooding caused by overnight snow, according to National Highways.
The management company warns of the possibility of frost on many roads.
In addition, at least one rail line, in the Leeds (North) area, was closed.
Power outages affected many households in England and Wales.
Conditions are expected to improve in many parts of England today, according to the Met Office.

Bad weather in Germany too
Cancellations and delays in hundreds of flights at the airports of Munich, Stuttgart are caused by the bad weather affecting central and western Europe. A decline in the phenomena is expected from the afternoon.
The most serious problems are at Frankfurt airport, where at least 120 takeoffs and landings out of the 1,090 originally scheduled for today have already been canceled, a representative of the airport’s management company, Fraport, told the German news agency dpa. Runways had to be cleared because visibility was poor, and the de-icing process of the aircraft was causing long delays due to weather conditions.
At Munich airport, the problems are more limited, with few delays in the execution of the flight schedule, as well as in Stuttgart, where services ask passengers to arrive at the airport well in advance.
Problems due to the bad weather are also noted in the operation of the railways, mainly in the Frankfurt area, while the authorities advise drivers to take special care on the roads, where there may be snow or ice. In Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Thuringia, around 120 road accidents have been recorded since last night, but without serious injuries.
