On the first weekend of 2025, events in Austrian domestic politics came to a head. Until Thursday evening, a three-party coalition of ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos seemed to be the most likely form of government for the next few years, but the conditions have now completely changed with the breakdown of negotiations and the resignation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer as ÖVP leader. In the coming days, the course for the country’s political future will be set – several scenarios are conceivable.
