The state deputy of Carlos Minc (PSB) will celebrate the entry into force of a law that protects the Macaé river basin, in the Nova Friburgo region, with a canoe trip down the watercourse.
The idea is to cover around 6 km on February 22nd, with supporters and members of a canoeing association that helped in the campaign for the approval of the law. Municipal secretaries from municipalities in the region will be invited.
According to Minc, the Macaé, whose basin covers an area of 1,700 km², is one of the last rivers not yet completely polluted in the state. Of the 14 main areas in Rio de Janeiro, 8 are already degraded, with no fish or water supply. “We want to preserve those who can still be saved”, says the parliamentarian, author of the law.
The bill that established protection was negotiated for two years in the Assembly and faced opposition from rural producers in the region, who argue that the water could not be used for consumption by cattle and other animals. Because of this, an amendment guaranteeing this possibility was included in the text.
“The law says that there can be some activity, yes. It cannot change the quality of the river’s water, nor the volume. It has to guarantee the uses, for activities such as fishing and ecotourism”, says the deputy.
