Mercadona, a Spanish supermarket chain, has been gaining prominence in Portugal, where it entered in 2019 and, since then, has rapidly expanded its presence. Currently, the company has 60 stores spread across the country, in districts such as Porto, Braga, Lisbon, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, Setúbal and Leiria. The brand has won over the Portuguese thanks to its commitment to private label products and the quality-price ratio, standing out in the food distribution sector.
Among the retailer’s most popular products, the Hacendado brand’s Airfryer Fries stand out, which recently arrived on Portuguese shelves and became a real sales success. Imported from the Netherlands and launched in April 2024, these frozen fries were designed to be prepared quickly and conveniently, especially in hot air fryers (air fryer) or in the oven.
According to official data from Mercadona, in Portugal alone, around 22 thousand packages are sold per week, which is equivalent to approximately 90 thousand packages per month. The popularity of this product is largely due to its convenience and ease of preparation. According to an official company source, success is linked to the simplicity of the process:
«It is an excellent solution for the oven and the airfryerwhich responds to current consumer trends. The affordable price has also contributed to the high demand. Each 750-gram package costs 1.90 euros, allowing you to prepare several meals.
