We enter a new year and 2025 will be the year of Municipal Elections. This was precisely one of the reasons that led 273 city halls, out of a total of 308, to apply discounts on IPTU 2025 for home owners who have children. Adherence to family IPTU has increased among city halls and there are six more municipalities promising discounts on the payment of this tax to homeowners with children.
Unlike what happened in 2024, this year, home owners with children who live in the municipalities of Lisbon, Setúbal, Faro, Aveiro, Coimbra, Évora, Funchal and Leiria will also be entitled to a discount on Family IMI. According to information from Idealista, a 30-euro discount on IMI is planned for home owners with one child, and owners with two children will have access to a 70-euro reduction in the tax amount.
In turn, families with three or more children will have a discount of R$140 on the total IPTU value.
The goes further and highlights that these IPTU discounts are only valid for those who have children and only for houses intended for permanent permanent housing. Note also that the composition of the household that counts is that which occurs up to the last day of the previous year to which the tax relates. We are therefore talking about December 31, 2023, since the IPTU paid in 2025 relates to the year 2024.
Finally, be aware that more than 30 municipalities continued to not join IMI support, as was the case of Porto and Gaia. On the contrary, the people of the Algarve win, as home owners in Faro with children now have access to discounts on the Family IMI.
