Protagonist of “I’m Still Here”, the Brazilian actress defeated names like Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie in the drama category
Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, 59 years old, won the Golden Globe in the early hours of this Monday (6 January 2025) in the “Best Actress in a Drama Film” category. Playing the lawyer and human rights activist Eunice Paiva, the actress defeated names like Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie and Kate Winslet.
The Golden Globe is an unprecedented award in the acting categories for Brazil. Regarding nominations, the last one in films came in 1999, precisely with Fernanda Torres’ mother, actress Fernanda Montenegro, for “Central Brazil”. At the time, she lost the award to Australian Cate Blanchett, for “Elizabeth”.
The Brazilian fast at the Golden Globes, therefore, ended this Sunday with Torres’ victory in “I’m Still Here”. Brazil’s last award was for “Central Brazil”also by director Walter Salles and starring Montenegro, in the “Best Foreign Film” category. “Black Orpheus”by Marcel Camus, in 1960, was also awarded.
In this year’s category, the award went to the French film “Emilia Pérez”.
According to prestigious North American magazines in the entertainment field, such as The Hollywood Reporter ea Vanity FairFernanda Torres had clear chances of being awarded, being in the category by the magazine Variety on Wednesday (1º.jan).
The Brazilian actress competed with the following actresses in the Best Drama Film Actress category:
- Pamela Andersonby “The Last Showgirl”;
- Angelina Jolieby “Maria”;
- Nicole Kidmanby “Babygirl”;
- Tilda Swintonby “The Room Next Door”;
- Kate Winsletby “Lee”.
Of the nominees, only Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet have already won the award in other editions. All three are also Oscar winners.
Despite winning at the Golden Globes, Fernanda Torres did not make the list of pre-nominees for the BAFTA, the most prestigious film award in the United Kingdom and which nominates likely names for the Oscar. Experts believe that the fact that the film was not distributed equally in all countries affected the British jury’s selection criteria.
The Golden Globes serve as a “thermometer” for the 2025 Oscars, being the ceremony that opens the awards circuit. Walter Salles’ film is still aiming for an Oscar nomination on January 17th.
