On Sunday night (5), Fernanda Torres made history on the Golden Globe stage. At 59 years old, the Brazilian actress was crowned Best Actress in a Drama Film for her moving portrayal of Eunice Paiva in “Still I’m Here”, directed by Walter Salles. This is the first time that a Brazilian woman has won in this category, an achievement that reaffirms the power of national cinema on the international stage.

The ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, marked the beginning of the 2025 awards season. Broadcast live on TNT and the Max platform, the event brought together the biggest names in the film industry. Fernanda beat competitors like Angelina Jolie (“Maria Callas”) and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), both favorites for the award, and surprised by receiving a standing ovation.

In a speech full of emotion, Fernanda dedicated the achievement to her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, also a legend of cinema and theater. “My God, I didn’t prepare anything, because I didn’t know if I was ready for this”, began the actress, visibly moved. “I want to thank Walter Salles, my partner and friend, for this incredible story. And, of course, I dedicate this award to my mother, who was here 25 years ago. This is proof that art resists and inspires us even in difficult times”, he said.

With the victory, Torres strengthens his candidacy for the 2025 Oscars, increasing expectations of another historic nomination for Brazil. “I’m Still Here” is a work that portrays the challenges faced by Eunice Paiva, a central figure in the fight for human rights in Brazil, in a context of pain and hope. Fernanda’s performance has received critical praise since its debut, being described as “intense and transformative”.
