Heavy rain warning is in effect until 10am on Monday (6th January) for almost 200 cities in the North and Northeast regions
The (National Institute of Meteorology) issued this Sunday (January 5, 2025) a warning of intense rain for a band that runs from Amazonas to Maranhão, also covering regions of Pará and Tocantins.
Rains of up to 100 millimeters per day and winds that can reach 100 kilometers per hour are forecast. There is a risk of power outages, falling trees, flooding and electrical discharges. The warning is valid until 10 am on Monday (Jan 6), for almost 200 cities in these states, and is classified as orange level, which indicates danger.
In addition, milder rains are expected to affect much of the country. Around 1,500 municipalities in 13 states and the Federal District are expected to record rainfall of up to 55 mm/hour, with intense winds, but a low risk of occurrences.
The yellow level alert, which represents potential danger, covers all of Espírito Santo and Tocantins and almost all municipalities in Amazonas, Pará, Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais. It should also rain in the north of Rondônia and the south of Roraima, in the southwest of Maranhão and Piauí, in the west and extreme south of Bahia and in the north of Rio de Janeiro.
Inmet recommends that the population avoid using electronic devices plugged in during storms. In case of gusts of wind, you should also not seek shelter under trees, nor park vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs. It is also important to follow the guidelines of the Civil Defense and Fire Department of each location.
WEATHER IN JANUARY
Inmet predicts that the month of January in Brazil will have rainfall within the climatological average and, on some occasions, above average, in a large part of the North, South and Northeast regions.
In the Southeast, rainfall should remain within normal limits, or above, in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo precipitation should be lower than usual for this month.
A similar situation should occur in the Center-West, with rainfall within normal parameters, or above, in a large part of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul and below-standard records in Goiás and the northwest and southeast regions of Mato Grosso do Sul.
Thermometer forecasts indicate heat above the standard for the month, with some days even hotter, especially in the north of the country, with an average air temperature exceeding 28 degrees Celsius.
