“The IAEA Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhia (ISAMZ) team stationed at the plant reported hearing two loud explosions coming from outside the site’s perimeter at approximately 12:45 pm and 3:45 pm local time. For now, the IAEA has not yet been able to confirm no impact,” the note said.
The IAEA also reports hearing machine gun fire in the vicinity of the plant on several occasions.
UN agency staff also say that military activities around Europe’s largest nuclear plant, “including multiple explosions at various distances from the site”, have intensified over the past 24 hours.
“An attack on any nuclear power plant is completely unacceptable. Taking into account the increase in military activity at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, I once again call for maximum restraint to avoid the obvious danger to its security,” said the organization’s director general , Rafael Mariano Grossi, mentioned in the note.
