This weekend, striker Luis Suárez helped rescue a man who was threatening to hang himself if his partner didn’t show up. The Inter Miami player was on vacation with his family in his home country in the Canelones region. Suárez participated in part of the conversations with the man, which lasted almost 20 hours. The information was published by the Spanish newspaper “Marca”.
According to the Uruguayan police, the man climbed a tree and said he would only leave when his partner was there. Authorities who arrived at the scene noticed that he was unarmed, but had a rope tied around his neck. Suárez and his wife, Sofía Balbi, approached the site while walking nearby and the Uruguayan participated in the conversations along with members of a non-governmental organization specializing in social psychology.
In an interview with the channel “Telenoche Uruguay”, Andrea, a member of the NGO, stated that because he was a well-known player, he was able to talk to the man. The situation began at 11pm on Friday and lasted until around 5:30pm on Saturday.
The man is accused of domestic violence and is under precautionary measures. When he finally came down, he was placed under the care of the Specialized Domestic Violence Unit of the Uruguayan Ministry of the Interior and will receive professional attention and evaluation.
