Private schools are gaining more and more strength in Portugal, and much of the blame lies with the instability of public schools. Even people who prefer public education are often “forced” to opt for private education.
Private schools are already the majority in Porto and Lisbon. In numbers detailed this Monday by , it is possible to see that this type of teaching is gaining more and more space in public schools – and already represent 32% of the total national territory.
Cloud JN, Filinto Limapresident of the board of directors of the National Association of Directors of Groups and Public Schools (ANDAEP), says that the instability of public education is being the main ally of private education.
According to the leader, the parents themselves admit that this instability worries them – mainly due to the strikes and consequent days without classes.
Mothers and fathers interviewed by ZAP, when they point out a reason for choosing private over public, immediately and precisely say the following: “greve”.
“In my case, both my husband and I are away from our families. When there is a strike, We have no one to leave the child with.. One of us has to sacrifice and we are forced to miss work several times”, laments a mother.
“There is stability in schools, in private provision, that people seek”, he confirms Rodrigo Queiroz e Melodirector of the Association of Private and Cooperative Education Establishments (AEEP), in statements to JN.
The increase in private schools is a response to instability in the public… but this response is only for those who can.
Be it for lack of economic possibilities or access to private education (for example, in more remote areas of the country), many Portuguese families continue no solution to the problems of public education.
